Great Marlborough Street, Manchester

This 520 bed residential accommodation building is located within the Southern Gateway area of Manchester City Centre, occupying a strategic location in close proximity to the Oxford Road Corridor, and within walking distance of all of the services and facilities offered by Manchester City Centre.

The building’s concrete structure helps with its inherent stiffness, and the concrete’s mass helps dampen the building acceleration. The location of the core, vertical transportation, mechanical risers and fire fighting strategy were economically coordinated and designed to give an optimum structural system where every element is in the right position to provide maximum contribution to the building’s lateral restraint.

Post tensioned 200mm thick slabs were deployed in the residential floors allowing the number of floors in the tower to be maximised.

The building was constructed by Shepherd Construction on a very tight site adjacent to the railway viaduct carrying main line services into Oxford Road Station.

At 37 storeys, GMS is the 2nd tallest building in Manchester and is a 2013 RIBA Regional Award Winner.
