The Archive Building, University of Leeds/Marks and Spencer Ltd

The Archive Building is situated on the Western Campus at the University of Leeds, adjacent to the Liberty Building. The new insitu concrete building provides the University of Leeds and Marks & Spencer with modern repository spaces with a suitably controlled environment for their valuable stock.

18,500m² of modern mobile shelving accommodates the University’s most valuable books and magazines. The M&S archives containing historical photographs and films, unique textiles and historical papers are housed in the M&S ‘strong room’, which provides environmentally controlled storage. The retailer’s permanent exhibition is also housed here, along with exhibition spaces, a conference suite, reading rooms and offices.

The building is designed to the highest environmental standards to achieve U-values of 0.15w/m²k with an airtightness target of 3 m³/hm² at 50 Pa. The scheme achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
